"It was his refusal to give a stranger a cigarette that led to Alex Tsvetkov needing brain surgery.
The man allegedly behind Sydney's latest unprovoked bashing was on parole and had a violent criminal past.
Mr Tsvetkov, an international student, went out with four friends on Wednesday night. Now he is in a critical condition and doctors have told his family to fly from Russia to be by his bedside immediately.
About 9.30pm, Mr Tsvetkov and friends were milling outside the St Leonards Tavern when a man, Albert Bolamatu, approached and asked for a cigarette.

When refused, he swung and connected with Mr Tsvetkov's head. Mr Tsvetkov fell back and his head hit the ground.
''I was just screaming, yelling, crying,'' said Maria Krasuik, a friend of Mr Tsvetkov's who witnessed the attack. ''He [Mr Tsvetkov] was unconscious.''
Mr Bolamatu is alleged to have then said: ''This is what happens.''
A security guard tried to restrain Mr Bolamatu but he advanced again.
''He tried to kick him again and again,'' Ms Krasuik said. ''[Mr Tsvetkov's] friend Craig tried to cover his body.''
The friend, Craig Norton, was kicked in the neck and ribs.
Mr Tsvetkov was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where, early on Thursday morning, a neurosurgeon inserted a device into his head to monitor brain pressure. He remains in a critical condition.
''He has a really strong head injury, so they are really worried,'' Ms Krasuik said after speaking with Mr Tsvetkov's family on Friday afternoon. They are making travel arrangements.
Police said Mr Bolamatu has a history of violent offences, including assault. His parole for a robbery offence was due to expire in September.
He faced Fairfield Local Court on Friday, charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm, common assault and breaching bail. He was refused bail to appear in Central Local Court on July 1.
Fairfax understands Mr Tsvetkov arrived in Australia at the start of last year and was studying business.
